SADI opened its doors to students in 1995 by offering the curriculum of the world-renown design school, Parsons the New School for Design, New York. The instructional method and education system were established through active consultation between Parsons and the SADI faculty team. Since its inception, SADI has continued to undergo regular revisions and updates to its programs through ongoing communication and in-person visits with staff and faculty from Parsons. Having progressively modified the Parsons’ curriculum to fit the Korean context, SADI set its foundational blocks in both leading international design education and advanced curriculum reflecting the evolving design environment in Korea. SADI has quickly built it’s reputation in the global design education community; since 2006, ht has received numerous awards at reddot, iF, IDEA, the world’s three most prestigious design contests. 2005 marked a turning point for SADI; what was previously divided into a career program and a preparatory program for students planning to enroll in schools overseas was consolidated into one comprehensive program. At the same time, the Department of Product Design was added to the curriculum to enhance training for product designers in the fields of information technology and electronics. This expansion was a direct response to industry needs, allowing SADI to not only broaden its educational scope but continue to provide its students with relevant and practical skills reflecting market demands. SADI, offering an intensive and highly-specialized education program difficult for traditional schools to provide, proposed a new paradigm of design education; in 2011, it launched a new three term undergraduate program to optimize the education and curricula by eliminating inefficiencies and redundancies in time and resources. SADI’s commitment to providing current design education that reflects the ever-changing market is key to its success in producing design professionals corresponding to the demands of the industry. SADI’s curriculum, modeled from Parsons, was effectively localized over the past 18 years to precisely fit the Korean reality, and is something we as an educational institution are proud of as it has advanced design education in Korea to a new level.
